China submits climate change plan
1368

CHINA: China is planning to have 220GW of installed wind power by 2020, nearly double its current capacity.

The country’s greenhouse gas reduction plan, submitted to the United Nations in advance of the climate change talks in Paris at the end of this year, pledges to source 15% of its energy from non-fossil sources by the end of this decade, rising to 20% by 2030.

Large increases in solar and hydro capacity are also planned, but carbon emissions are not expected to peak until 2027.

In a separate announcement, the US and Brazil have formed a climate partnership agreeing to generate 20% of their combined electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

No specific figures for wind power were given, but the US will need to triple its renewables capacity, while Brazil must double its clean energy generation, to meet the target.

The renewables target does not include hydro power.
